							WHAT IS IT

## Product Owner

A **Product Owner (PO)** is one of the three core members of a **Scrum Team** (together with the Scrum Master and the Developers). Their primary responsibility is to **maximize the value of the product** delivered by the Scrum Team to customers and stakeholders.

A Product Owner is not merely a recipient and executor of incoming requirements. On the contrary, they actively decide **what the team should work on and why**. They ensure that the team focuses only on work that delivers real value to both customers and the business.

A good Product Owner is able to clearly explain for every requirement—even a seemingly minor one:

- why it should be implemented,

- what value it delivers, and

- why it has this particular priority.

## Responsibilities of a Product Owner

In practice, a Product Owner has several key responsibilities, most notably:

- **Creating and Communicating the Product Vision**
The Product Owner defines the product vision, explains it to the team, and continuously discusses and aligns it with stakeholders.

- **Managing the Product Backlog**
They are responsible for ensuring that the Product Backlog is clear, up to date, well-structured, and ready in time for the team’s work.

- **Backlog Prioritization**
The Product Owner decides the order of backlog items to maximize the value of the product.

- **Stakeholder Management**
They gather stakeholder expectations and communicate the results of the Scrum Team’s work back to stakeholders.

- **Connecting the Team with Customers**
The Product Owner ensures the team understands customer needs, market conditions, and the product’s business goals.

## Knowledge and Skills of a Product Owner

A good Product Owner has:

- deep knowledge of the product and the market in which it operates,

- at least a basic understanding of the **SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle)**,

- the ability to define a clear product vision and long-term product direction,

- the skill to communicate this vision clearly to both the team and stakeholders.

A well-defined and properly communicated vision significantly increases team motivation and helps the team take **shared ownership of the product’s business goals**.

## What Is Not the Product Owner’s Responsibility

Although the Product Owner plays a key role in the team, the following are **not** their responsibilities:

- managing the team,

- micromanaging developers’ work,

- implementing Scrum or agility within the team,

- line management and people management responsibilities.

## The Product Owner in Relation to the Scrum Master

The Product Owner is a **partner of the Scrum Master**, not their superior or subordinate. Both roles have distinct but **equally important responsibilities** and jointly support the success of the Scrum Team.

The specific responsibilities of a Product Owner may also vary depending on the **scaling framework** used by the organization (e.g. SAFe, LeSS, Nexus).

## Official Definition of the Product Owner Role

A detailed and official description of the Product Owner role can be found in the **Scrum Guide**, which is the primary source defining the Scrum framework.

## What a Product Owner Is Not

Although the Product Owner has significant responsibility for product direction and priorities, they are **not a manager or a superior of the team**. The role focuses on **product value**, not on managing people or controlling their work.

A Product Owner is **not**:

- **A Project Manager**
Although a Product Owner may create a business-goal-oriented roadmap and prioritize work, they do not create detailed team plans and do not have people management responsibility.

- **A Line Manager**
They do not evaluate individual performance, assign rewards, give orders, or handle HR matters.

- **A Customer or Requirements Requestor**
The Product Owner is not merely a “requirements collector.” They actively decide which requirements are worth implementing and which are not.

- **A Product Backlog Administrator**
According to Scrum, the role is not limited to technical backlog maintenance. The Product Owner is primarily responsible for **direction, priority, and value**, not just documentation.

- **A Micromanager**
They do not tell developers how to do their work or which technical solutions to choose. The team is responsible for the *how*, while the Product Owner is responsible for the *what* and *why*.

- **A Scrum Master**
They are not responsible for implementing Scrum, facilitating events, or developing team collaboration. These areas belong to the Scrum Master role.

- **An Infallible Authority**
A Product Owner does not have all the answers. Their role is to make decisions based on available information, feedback, and collaboration with the team and stakeholders.

## Summary

The Product Owner is the **owner of product value**, not a people manager or project controller. Their key contribution lies in making the **right priority decisions** and guiding the long-term direction of the product in line with customer and business needs.
